Salary Position based on knowledge and experience

Creating Hope Society is an Indigenous non-profit organization that works with children,

youth, and families impacted by the ’60s Child Welfare Scoop and supports families

impacted by child welfare. CHS’s mission is to create hope for positive change, mend

hearts, and contribute to reconciliation through healing the impacts of intergenerational

trauma and reconnecting with culture and community.

Program Summary

The Indigenous Boys Matter Too! The program is created to support and guide Indigenous male
youth between the ages of 14 and 18 who want to increase their basic life skills, gain access to
traditional cultural knowledge and Ways of Being, and develop skills to build healthy
relationships and make better life choices.
The IBMT Program Assistant will be part of a team that encourages, promotes, and creates
opportunities for Indigenous male youth to learn and enhance basic life skills, increase access
to Culture, Sport, and Recreation to promote healthy behaviors and relationships and create
opportunities for positive outcomes in areas such as employment, education, cultural identity,
personal development, and increased social support.

Responsibilities

 Responsible for supporting innovative ways to deliver supportive programming for

participants; this includes in-person, virtual, land-based, and other programming options

 Responsible for supporting, leading, and/or co-facilitating workshop

presentations/classes regarding the educational activities of the program, such as

Indigenous Culture and Traditions, Indigenous History, Educational Field Trips, Arts and

Crafts, Community Involvement, and volunteering

 Provide leadership, guidance, and support to program participants

 Support a code of conduct among the participants which is respectful and inclusive

 Support the Program Coordinator and Program Evaluator to contribute to the annual

evaluation

 Be available to chaperone participants during guided field trips, cultural activities, and

ceremonies

 Establish and maintain respectful and professional relationships with organizations who

are partners in the delivery of the program

 Responsible for gathering data for monthly reports: Write narrative and activity reports

for program activities, contribute to the annual report, and share with the Program

Coordinator and management

 Maintain proper filing of client information that complies with confidentiality requirements

 Assist the Program Coordinator in developing and planning the program budget and

reconciliation of program funds

 Other duties as required

Requirements

 Post-secondary education in Child & Youth Care and/or 3 years’ experience working with

youth

 Three years of experience working with Indigenous Peoples

 Knowledge of Cree culture, history, values, and traditions

 Knowledge and understanding of trauma-informed practices

 Excellent written and communication skills

 Experience in facilitating groups

 Proficiency in Microsoft Software (Excel, Word, Outlook)

 Self-directed, motivated, and able to work independently

 Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment and interact with

the general and culturally diverse public and service providers

 Must have a valid Driver’s License and reliable vehicle with 2 Mil LPD

 Criminal Record/Vulnerable Sector Check required

 Child Welfare Intervention Check required

Project Research Assistant Coordinator Position The Creating Hope Society an Indigenous non-profit organization seeking to hire a Research Coordinator Assistant for the summer of 2024. Must be returning to school in September 2024 and be under the age of 30. This position will be reporting directly to the Research Coordinator.

This project aims to develop, implement, and measure the effectiveness of Indigenous culture and land-based interventions in reducing gender-based violence (GBV) experienced by Indigenous gender-diverse peoples.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Create doodle polls for leadership/advisory meetings
Set up meetings (in person or on zoom)
Maintain and/or set up social media accounts (mainly FB)
Update common drive and binders with activities done or in planning
Assist with editing documents
Translation of research interviews (or transcription if we don’t have one available)
Support the development of promotional materials – i.e. pamphlet style or postcards
Taking notes during events to track gaps, what worked well, what didn’t, things people suggested for improvement or what they liked.
Create and maintain contact spreadsheet to use across all programs in CHS – such as list of Elders, vendors, drummers, caterers, food trucks

Qualifications/Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of or lived experience working with Indigenous people
Knowledge of Indigenous protocols (event based)
Knowledge of 2SLGBTQ+ and gender based violence
Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills.
Computer skills are required
Ability to work independently/sound time management skills/strong problem solving skills
Relationship Building
Must have reliable transportation and current valid Alberta Driver’s License and 2 million insurance and liability coverage
Driver’s Abstract required; Criminal Record Check and Child Welfare Intervention Check required.
Must live in Edmonton, Alberta or the surrounding area.
Knowledge and familiarity with Indigenous research and research ethics principles is required.

The Edmonton COVID19 Rapid Response Collaborative (ECRRC) consists of 13 agencies that have been responding to social and economic crisis triggered by COVID-19 pandemic. With financial support from the Province of Alberta, and the in kind assistance of the Government of Canada and the City of Edmonton, the collaboration aims to effectively contribute to flattening the curve by leveraging efforts of the various agencies involved. ECRRC will provide timely, dignified and culturally safe supports and information for Edmontonians who have tested positive for COVID-19 or have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive.

ECRRC believes that a strong community is created through building collaborative working relationships and creating new models to leverage each agency’s strengths and capacities to better serve the communities in which they are rooted. The communities served by the 13 organizations include Indigenous Peoples, immigrants, those living with disability and other vulnerable communities in Edmonton. ECRRC welcomes all Edmontonians in need of support to heal in dignified and caring ways to contact our (toll free) multilingual emergency response centre at 1-833-738-7727. Starting March 1, 2021, outreach workers will provide support in 30+ languages from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

Callers will receive relevant information and be connected to needed services and supports including food, assistance with applications for income support, health and wellness, and cultural connections. RETURNING TO SCHOOL for CHILDREN in CARE

Alberta is currently in Phase 2 and Alberta Education has set out their Return to School Plan.

It has been recommended that the preferred option for children in care, is that they return to In-Class Learning this fall as it is best for their overall health and well-being.

2 possible return to school scenarios:

In-Class Learning – students return to class physically with extra health protection measures (preferred scenario)
At-Home Learning – some school divisions offer this option and it is provided by the child’s school and their regular teachers – this is different than homeschooling (requires manager approval)

***not all school divisions will offer at-home learning

If caseworkers and/or caregivers have concerns regarding the Return to School Plan they should speak with the individual school regarding their concerns and explore the options available.

Children between the ages of 6 and 16 are legally required to attend school.

Decisions about a child in care’s schooling and its method of delivery are not delegated to caregivers, but are the responsibility of CI as the child’s guardian. The caregivers’ and other guardian’s input and opinions is valuable and will factor in the decision.

At-Home Learning is considered an EXCEPTION to a child physically returning to school.

any exception to children and youth in care physically returning to school requires a manager’s approval

Home Schooling (different than at-home learning) is generally not the option of choice for children in care due to the high demand on the caregiver as the educator.

Masks for School

grade 4 to 12 students must wear masks where physical distancing cannot be maintained (hallways, busses, etc)
masks are not required while students are seated in the classroom during instruction if physical distancing guidance is followed
masks are required in the classroom when close contact between students and staff is occurring
mask use for K to grade 3 is optional (some schools may require)
all students and staff will get 2 reusable masks
school staff will get one reusable face shield to use in schools – a mask must be worn with the face shield
exemptions will be made for students and staff unable to wear mask due to medical or other needs

Work with children and families to provide cultural teachings and assist in the development and implementation of cultural components to the programs using tools such as Traditional Parenting. Provides supportive and trusting relationships with the Family members
Engages in collaborative community partnerships to promote traditional healing, cultural teachings and practice.
Participate in team meetings, agency meetings and training deemed necessary Maintain an appropriate record and information system.
Ensure that accurate program and client records are maintained, and that confidentiality is a priority. Ensure that all relevant documentation is complete (contact notes, pre-post evaluation, exit interviews be completed by team-lead)
Adheres to Creating Hope Society policies and standards personnel policy.
To maintain a healthy and safe environment.
Help build a model of cultural safety for grieving, the ceremonial healing process, and to reintroduce the traditional ways of knowing and doing.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Social Work Diploma, or Human Services Diploma or Aboriginal studies with lived experience
Teachings and experience in traditional language, knowledge, healing practices and wisdom
Experience working with children, youth and families.
Demonstrates practical and historical knowledge of intergeneration trauma, stress and cultural repression Promotes cultural values and increases awareness about cultural traditions and spirituality.
Strong organizational skills, ability to multi-task in a dynamic working environment; self-motivated personality; ability to work independently and as a team player
Mentors, encourages and participates in cultural, recreational, and social programs that offer positive and healthier alternatives to balanced lifestyles
Demonstrates an ability to maintain composure and performance while under stress or pressure.

The Creating Hope Society is a non-profit organization established to recognize the Sixties and Seventies Child Welfare Scoop is a continuation of the Residential School era. In all of our work, CHS seeks to cultivate traditional Indigenous values of mutual respect, shared leadership and responsibility, ethical conduct and acknowledgment of diverse ways of knowing in our work with individuals, families and our partner agencies and organizations.

Overview of Job

We are seeking a researcher, and a writer for the specific project “Indigenous Story-Telling; Truth Telling to Reconciliation”. This project is in response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s calls to action that highlight the need to bring forward Indigenous story-telling, truth-telling and community approaches to reconciliation.

Essential Duties

Must research for Lit review
Must have interviewing skills
Must have excellent writing skills
Must be able to effectively and efficiently write the narratives
Must be able to develop and maintain a strategic relationship with staff, other agencies and community at large.
Must be able to collaborate and work efficiently with digital director
Must have traditional and cultural awareness
Must be able to know the resources available when in need

General guidelines:

Under the direction of the Executive Director ensures that the strategic project is accomplished well and complete promptly on time.

Collaborate closely with the digital director.

Qualifications :

You must have a Diploma or a Bachelor degree in communications, journalism, social sciences, administration, arts or a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution.
A minimum of one (1) to three (3) years of related experience in communications, public relations, marketing, community development, project coordination, would be a definite asset. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
You will also possess exceptional reading, writing, editing, proofreading, presentation and event planning skills. Knowledge or experience in graphic design, desktop publishing, word processing, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Suite and presentation software applications is an asset.
To be considered for the position, a valid Class 5 Driver’s License is required.
A criminal records check and child welfare intervention check will be required before an offer of contractual employment is presented.
Must possess a sound understanding and appreciation of Indigenous culture and issues
Three references: two (2) from a previous employer and one (1) character references.

We were delighted to be invited to 100 Women Who Care’s quarterly fundraising event on April 16 th , 2019 entitled: Let’s Hear It For The Boys! Our “Aboriginal Fathers Love Their Children Too!” program was nominated and drawn as one of the top three finalists.

The event will take place at 6:00pm at London Villas Hub and is open for anyone to attend. Register for free on Eventbrite or on the 100 Women Who Care Facebook Page .

How we win: the finalist charity will get an opportunity to give a 5 minute presentation on everything wonderful about our organization and our program. We’ll also have a display table with information for members and guests to browse and learn more about what we do. After all three charities have presented, members of 100 Women Who Care Edmonton will vote and the winning charity walks away with a $100 donation from every member.

How you can help: Come out on April 16 th and consider becoming a member. This is not only for women. Men are welcome to attend and become Supporters as well. Only members can vote but by joining the organization and casting your vote for Creating Hope Society, you can give us a real chance at winning! Every vote counts.

The Sixties Scoop

The Sixties Scoop is a term that refers to a phenomenon in Canada, beginning in the 1960s and carrying on until the 1970s, of unusually high numbers of Aboriginal children apprehended from their families and fostered or adopted out, usually into non-Aboriginal families.

These children have since articulated their sense of loss: loss of their cultural identity, lost contact with their birth families, barred access from medical histories and for status Indian children, loss of their status.

Creating Hope for the Future: A Gathering has now entered our history records. We had tremendous response and even greater participation in the Sharing Circles.

Thank you so very much to all those who showed great courage in the circles. New friendships were formed, partnerships initiated and a ‘family’ was born. Please keep our site bookmarked – we will post some information and photos from the Gathering as soon as possible.

Our vision to engage in a process of reconciliation that will allow Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal caregivers to arrive at a new place of understanding child welfare, that will end forever, its historically devastating impacts.

Where do we go next? We have had requests from the province of British Columbia and Saskatchewan to host the next Sixties Scoop Gathering. Let us hear from you.

Creating Hope Society is looking for leaders like you to join our Board of Directors. Since 2006, our volunteer board has been the strategic heart of our organization, ensuring that in our work for children and families, we deliver real results, respond to changes in our community and always deliver the highest ethical standards to be worthy of our public support.

If you are one or more of the following, we’d like to talk to you:

Energetic and entrepreneurial business people, who are not already overextended with other commitments, eager to put their enthusiasm for changing the world to work, for our children and families.
Community leaders and philanthropists willing to engage their peers to work for the betterment of Indigenous, Metis and Inuit families and communities.
Leaders at our partner agencies — parenting, education, family violence, justice, child and youth.
Services — interested in building strong programs with us.
Scholars and academics who want to put their expertise in understanding the cycle of child welfare, historic trauma and physical and mental health promotion, children, youth and families to work in the community.
Parents, grandparents and others who have a demonstrated talent, joy and energy in chairing successful fundraising events and promotions.

If you hold yourself to high expectations, then you’ll find board service very rewarding. We are looking for folks who will:

Attend six board meetings annually
Actively serve on one of our committees: Program, Advocacy and Outreach, Promotions and Events, Governance
Advocate for our needs in the community and among your colleagues and peers
Reviewing the Strategic Plan and setting annual goals for the organization (including financial, operational, social and environmental goals)
Monitoring the financial statements of the organization
Reviewing and setting policy as required
Be always curious to learn more about the field of Early Intervention Program and as well as nonprofit governance

Experiencing Creating Hope Society: Danielle Sehn

Danielle spent some time with us during her practicum. She share with us her experience:

One of the major learnings that I gained from my time as a practicum student with Creating Hope Society (CHS) was an understanding of the importance of engaging in advocacy.

Being placed with a family liaison through the Aboriginal Mothers Advocacy Project (AMAP) allowed me to gain insight into advocacy on an individual level. During my time in AMAP, I was able to critically evaluate skills utilized in building relationships and observe my supervisor speak up in meetings to ensure the voice and needs of CHS’ service users were addressed.

This role allowed me to gain an understanding of the importance of a client-centered practice. Having an understanding of policy (specifically the Child, Youth, and Family Enhancement Act) was essential for practicing advocacy on an individual level and allowed us to advise service users on their rights. An understanding of policy and my time at CHS also allowed me to gain an understanding of the importance of engaging in advocacy at a systemic level.

My time at CHS allowed me to reflect upon the ongoing relationship between colonization, the Social Work profession, and Indigenous communities. The practicum has impacted my professional identity as it has increased my awareness to the importance of engaging in decolonization in my practice.
